Paul's Point - To Cloud or not to Cloud - Is that the question??

No its not!
The question is – what are my requirements for my business and how do we achieve them together?

Increasingly over the last two years Cloud has become a valid option for some businesses.

So – what is “Cloud”?

Cloud is the general term given to any service provided to an end user where the service is hosted by a third party and paid for based on usage. Email for example is usually paid per mailbox (user) while an application would be charged by the concurrent user.

Cloud solutions have been around in one form or another for nearly 20 years (did somebody say Hotmail or Yahoo mail?), so the concept is not a new one.

What is new is the way it can be delivered to a user or a business.

There are different types of Clouds:

Private clouds: Direct connection between you and the hosted solution.

Public clouds: Connection over the public internet such as hotmail.com.
Hybrid clouds: A mixture of public and private including on and off premise.
Enterprise clouds: Private cloud for enterprise companies in the big end of town joining multiple third party solutions as one large solution.

How does the Small to Medium Business take advantage of these Clouds?

That’s the million dollar question and is a difficult one to answer in a paragraph or two! It comes down to YOUR business requirements, how you do business now and in the future, how you see your employee’s work style and the flexibility you want to provide to them. The same flexibility can be achieved in the on-premises model however a major difference is the cost model – Operational vs Capital. Owning software vs leasing software, ongoing costs that can move with your company (up or down) or fixed assets that could be a liability. A cloud service can grow or downsize with you usually on a monthly basis.

Each has its place – our job here at HighPoint is to help you find the place that best suits your requirements. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to IT. It’s our job to know what fits your business well and what does not.

Paul's Point

Pauls' Point is a new feature in our newsletter. Our resident geek Paul will provide us with a review each month on the latest technology. This month Paul has reviewed the iPhone 4S - will you be rushing out to get the latest Apple product?

iPhone 4S

This isn't the iPhone 5. No matter how badly you wanted something slim, sleek and wedge-shaped, this isn't it. It's a new spin on an old phone that will shock none, but give it half a chance, and it will still impress.

The iPhone 4S comes with a faster processor, a better camera, a smarter virtual assistant and twice the storage of its predecessor.

Iphone 4S Virtual Assistant: SIRI

Siri can do a huge number of things, from sending texts and emails to finding restaurants and getting directions from one place to another. Say you want to send a text to your wife to remind her to pick up the dogs from boarding on the way home from work. You can just say, "Tell my wife don't forget the dogs." Siri will send your wife a message saying, "Don't forget the dogs."

That context works in other situations, too, like receiving a text message from someone, asking Siri to check your calendar, and then just saying "Reply, I'll see you then." You don't need to say who to reply to, Siri will remember

So, then, is it worth the upgrade? Well, if your contract happens to be up and you want an iPhone and you haven't already jumped on the iPhone 4 then yes, this is the one you want. It does come at a $100 premium over its predecessor, but in the long run that premium will be worth it as the 4S will surely be supported by Apple for a good bit longer than the 4 (as the 3GS continues to be, while the 3G is now fading into obsolescence). But, if you're mid-contract or haven't quite yet been wooed by all that iOS has to offer, we'd recommend sitting this one out. The iPhone 4S does everything better than the iPhone 4, but it simply doesn't do anything substantially different.

Is this the end of HP PC's?

The CEO of HP announced last month that the company is considering in the next three months a plan to sell or spin-off their PC business. Slowing sales and little profit have led management to explore the sale or spin-off of the Personal Systems Group (PSG) unit, which deals in PCs, smartphones and tablets.
Being the largest PC vendor in the world and most profitable after Apple, it will be very interesting to see the direction HP will head in should they move away from PC's.
